How to use it?
This is the total roof surface area that drains into these gutters. Include all roof planes feeding these gutters (including dormers).
Use your local design rainfall / code number. Higher numbers = more water per hour.
We increase effective drainage area for steeper roofs. This is standard gutter sizing practice.
Separate gutter sections on different roof edges. Each run normally gets at least one downspout.
Longest single straight gutter section. We'll use this to check gutter capacity and spacing of downspouts.
Material affects cost. Vinyl and aluminum are lower cost, copper and half-round are premium.
Taller buildings require more ladder / lift work and sometimes larger downspouts. That raises install cost.

This tool uses common U.S. residential gutter practice (impervious roof runoff, roof pitch factor, design storm intensity). Results are for budgeting only. Final gutter/downspout layout, hanger spacing, slope, discharge location, and code compliance must be confirmed by a site visit. This is not an engineered / stamped design.

The tool uses your total roof area, local rainfall intensity, roof pitch, number of gutter runs, and the longest run to estimate peak runoff in gallons per minute. It then recommends gutter size, downspout size, and the minimum number of downspouts to handle that flow. You also get an installed cost range based on material and building height so you can budget with confidence before you request quotes.

How to Use It

  • Enter total roof area
    Type the total surface area that drains to the gutters you are sizing. Choose the unit you measured in. The calculator converts to square feet internally.
  • Select rainfall intensity
    Pick the design storm that matches your area. Higher intensity means more water per hour and larger drainage capacity.
  • Choose roof pitch
    Select the pitch that best represents your roof. Steeper roofs shed water faster, so the tool increases the effective area accordingly.
  • Enter number of gutter runs
    Type how many separate gutter sections will carry water. Each run usually needs at least one downspout.
  • Enter the longest gutter run
    Measure the longest straight section and pick the unit. The tool uses this to check capacity and downspout spacing.
