What Is an SFM to RPM Calculator?
An SFM to RPM Calculator converts Surface Speed — the recommended cutting speed for a specific material and tool combination — into Revolutions Per Minute (RPM), which is the actual spindle speed you dial into your CNC machine, lathe, or drill press.
Every cutting tool (end mills, drills, taps, reamers, turning inserts) has a manufacturer-recommended surface speed for each material. This speed keeps the cutting edge at the right temperature and load, maximizing tool life and surface finish. Because surface speed depends on the circumference of the tool, the same 300 SFM requires a very different spindle speed for a ½″ end mill vs. a 2″ face mill — and that is exactly what this calculator solves instantly.
